I came across this great project Galaxy Zoo via a Newbury Astronomy Society talk I went to recently. Basically you get to take part in classifying galaxies and other objects and the pooled results are used in real astronomy papers.

The Galaxy Zoo forums are active and they have discovered new previously unknown objects via public interest. Also people have been quoted in Astronomy journals and so on for their contributions and one girl even got to name a new object she found.
